The Boston Portuguese Festival and the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society are hosting its 9th Annual Azorean Whaleboat Regatta, one of the most celebrated events of the Boston Portuguese Festival. A fun and healthy way to spend the day among family and friends, our Regatta celebrates an inheritance common to New Englanders and Azoreans, the very first glimpse of what would be the Portuguese influence in the United States, the Whaling Industry.
Come meet us in the Charles River and enjoy the race or compete in these unique whaleboats owned and maintained by the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society. In addition to the races, there will be a whaleboat sailing demonstration, tours on the boats, an award ceremony and an opportunity to listen to some of the rich oral history behind whaling.
The Azorean Maritime Heritage Society is a U.S. based non-profit organization, founded in 1997, to promote the historical contributions of Azorean sailors and whaleboat builders to the U.S. whaling industry. Based in New Bedford, MA, it maintains the Azorean Whaleman Gallery at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
