In conjunction with the Red Room, the Songwriting Department is proud to present our monthly open mic event for Berklee songwriters. All current Berklee students are welcome to play. If you want to play, your song must be an original composition under five minutes long. Please show up at Cafe 939 any time after 6:00 p.m. to sign up. We'll take 25 writers and as many as 10 alternates who will play if others don't show up. One song each (unless we have few sign-ups, in which case you can play a song and wait until everybody who's signed up has played, then play again), no covers, and no drum kits, please. For more info, please email [email protected].

Department chair Bonnie Hayes is a songwriter perhaps best known for penning "Have A Heart" and "Love Letter," which restored Bonnie Raitt to superstardom with the multiplatinum, multi-Grammy-winning album Nick of Time. Her best-loved song might be her 80's pop-punk anthem and college radio hit, "Shelly's Boyfriend." Writing for artists as diverse as Bette Midler, Robert Cray, Adam Ant, David Crosby, and Booker T and the MGs, among others, Hayes has continued to craft songs one critic described as "sparkling clockwork mechanisms with a tendency to do the unexpected."

Famed for her kick-out-the-jams live show, Hayes has also enjoyed success as a musician, recording artist, and producer. She records at the Icehouse Studio in San Rafael, California; plays keyboards with popular local Americana artist Danny Click and the Hell Yeahs; and cofronts the band Mystery Dance with musical cohort Tim Eshliman (Commander Cody, the Moonlighters).
