The St. Stephen’s Concert Series presents the versatile and virtuosic duo of Peter H. Bloom (flute) and Mark Leighton (guitar) in a festive concert called Suites, Sonatas and Standards, featuring chamber music from the salons of Vienna, Paris and Sao Paulo, along with swinging jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. Peter and Mark have performed together for 25 years, winning praise for superb musicianship and entertaining concerts spanning the classical and jazz traditions.

The concert is Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 pm at St Stephen's Episcopal Church, 16 Highland Ave, Cohasset, MA. Free admission. For information: 781-383-1083.

The program will include Grand Duo for Flute and Guitar by Mauro Giuliani (a colleague of Beethoven and Rossini in Vienna’s golden age and a leading guitar virtuoso in 19th century Europe), Prelude No. 1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, the exuberant Entr’Acte by Jacques Ibert, and the lyrical Auf dem Wasser zu singen (Boating Song) by Franz Schubert. The concert will conclude with up-tempo jazz standards by Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and other great American tunesmiths

Peter H. Bloom, flute, concertizes in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand and is featured on 45 recordings (Sony Classical, Dorian, Leo, other labels). Acclaimed as both a classical and jazz artist, he performs with noted ensembles, including Ensemble Chaconne, Ensemble Aubade, The Makrokosmos Orchestra, and the world-renowned Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (47th season). He has appeared with jazz luminaries Sheila Jordan, Charles Neville, Ricky Ford, Jaki Byard, Geri Allen, and others. The Boston Globe called his playing “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength,” while Arts Fuse wrote, “His solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance.” Mr. Bloom is contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music. He has given lectures, classes and workshops at colleges and universities across the globe.

Mark Leighton, guitar, is known for his superb artistry and wide-ranging repertoire. He has performed at venues across the Northeast including Colby College, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, King’s Chapel, Corning Community College, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Elmira College, Eastern Nazarene College, and the Boston Public Library. He is a member of Copley Chamber Players and performs regularly with acclaimed jazz artists like Billy Novick and Ted Powers. He serves on the Applied Music Faculty at Colby College, teaches at St. George’s School in Newport, and was Artistic Director of First Night Quincy for 20 years. A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, Mr. Leighton studied with noted guitarists Robert Sullivan, David Leisner and Sharon Isbin, among others.

The St. Stephen’s Concert Series was conceived as a musical outreach to the South Shore community, inviting all persons to gather together to explore music presented by some of the area’s most accomplished performers. All concerts are free and open to the public. St. Stephen’s Church is located on the historic Cohasset Town Common at 16 Highland Avenue. There is plenty of parking on street or in the nearby Town Hall parking lot, and the church is easily handicap accessible from its entrance off Highland Avenue.
