Becoming ResilYINt: Transforming Your Stress Response Cycle through Yin -- with Emily Peterson

When given the space to do so, human beings will move toward healing. But how often do we actually sit back and allow for this healing space? Instead, most of us go into fix-it mode, try to make what we perceive as negative emotions go away, or otherwise distract ourselves.

Research suggests that depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and chronic stress are dis-eases of embodiment. In other words, these things are not just in our heads, but equally in our bodies. So, it’s not surprising that a new research study by Daukantaite et al in Plos One shows that a five-week yin yoga and mindfulness intervention resulted in a reduction of stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems.

In this yin workshop, we will take a deep dive into the pause in between shapes and explore how our bodies and minds respond to that space of physical and mental rebound. In this pause, vulnerability, fragility, or the restless energy that results from our movement-driven survival programming is often present. Rather than rushing through those feelings and sensations, we will instead practice noticing what arises in this pause—as well as the urge to get rid of it, to distract ourselves, or to use well-worn habits of our mind and body not to feel the vulnerability of these pauses.

The moment we start to feel our body transforming and returning to itself after a pose is the moment in which we begin to understand our own innate resilience. We have everything we need inside of ourselves to heal and grow—we just need to learn how to access it. Repeatedly practicing in the transitional pause, as well as adding additional resiliency practices, builds our capacity to face stress and make different choices—both of which are fundamental and life-changing tenets of resiliency, on and off the mat.

All workshops are non-refundable.
