Talented composers and virtuoso performers brought court music to a very high level in late renaissance Italy. Opportunities abounded for musicians in cities like Venice, Rome, Florence and Mantua, where courts explored reviving antique theater and music, and composers were encouraged to experiment with expressing human emotions through their music. Come hear dances by Piccinini and Kapsperger, a canzona by Gabrieli, and florid vocal music by Striggio, Gesualdo, Cavalieri and others, as well as Monteverdi’s masterpiece “Lamento d’Arianna” and Barbetta’s small pieces representing different characters from commedia dell’arte.

Burcu Gulec has performed all across her native Turkey and the United States, singing music of various styles from the Middle East and Asia Minor, as well as jazz, improvisation and electronic music. She is a featured performer in Othello in the Seraglio, a coffeehouse opera produced by the ensemble Dunya, and in Measure for Measure: the Music of Shakespeare’s Plays, a touring concert program presented by Ensemble Chaconne. A native of Cyprus, percussionist George Lernis travels regularly throughout the United States and Europe, performing with Dunya, Muscari, Mina Cho, and many other prominent jazz and world music groups. The members of El Dorado Ensemble are all active Boston-area musicians, frequently heard in concerts and recordings throughout the region. Lutenist Olav Chris Henriksen and viola da gambist Carol Lewis are also frequent collaborators with ensembles in the U.S. and abroad, including Capriccio Stravagante (Paris) and the Boston Camerata.
