Join the Fort Point Arts Community as we celebrate the opening of The Atrocity of Us.

Five artists explore a shared empathy for the problems encountered within 21st century American and world culture. The Atrocity of Us demands an open dialogue between artist and viewer. It will directly challenge us all to consider where our morality resides within an increasingly diverse but equally divisive social dichotomy.Nut Graf: A Below-the-Fold Analysis of American Gun Culture: Paul Arsenault seeks to create a greater personal understanding of American gun culture. He investigates the less ostentatious news underlying societal burdens that, over time, are pressurized and released in dramatic, and usually deadly, fashion. His quasi-realistic narrative oil paintings question the viewer, rather than state the artist’s opinion.United States of Shame: “Why is there so much shame in these United States of America?” asks Michael Conroy. “Shame seems most commonly found in addiction, whether sexual or substance as well as mental health, racism, sexism, suicide, or abortion. These issues continue to isolate us from one another. But if they are not uncommon, then why can’t we have these very issues bring us together?”History Is Here and Now: Rachel Shatil, Walter Kopec, and Rick Dorff are inspired by and responding to the 2016 Presidential election and the deterioration of democratic institutions in the United States and all over the world. “There is a shared anxiety among millions across the globe that history is repeating itself, that we are living in a world that not only tolerates hate, segregation, atrocities, and genocides, but rather promotes them,” they note. “It is essential to bring back the collective historical memory of our brutal past – to remind ourselves that the abyss is not just a vague paranoid delusion, it is happening here and now.”Opening Reception: August 15, 6-9 p.m.Closing Reception: September 12, 6-9 p.m.; Artist talk 8 p.m.
