Welcome to an amazing winter hike! Mount Tom, Mount Field, Mount Willey, and Mount Avalon Loop Trail is a 9 mile loop trail located near Bretton Woods, New Hampshire that features a river and is rated as difficult. A loop trail hitting three 4,000' peaks. From AMC Highland Center, we will take the Avalon trail and head west on A-Z Trail to Mt. Tom summit, then southwest on Willey Range Trail to Mts. Field and Willey summits. Finally we will return north to Mt. Field, then northeast on Avalon Trail to Mt. Avalon and returning to Highland Center.

This will be a great moderate to difficult hike. Our first peak, Tom will not offer a lot of views but both Field and Wiley has great views. Finally on our way back, Avalon, which is not on the 4K list will offer us the best views as the last peak of the hike. So our goal would be to make this a fast pace hike so that we can enjoy the views up Avalon.

Distance: 9.miles

Elevation gain: 3392 ft.

Difficulty: Hard

There will be a gear check for this hike at the pick up location and at the trailhead if you're a non-carpooler. If you don't have the gear, you will not be allowed to join the hike. No exceptions!

Waterproof, winter-hiking boots (no sneakers, no trail runners)

Microspikes (no yaktrax)

Snowshoes (Mostly mandatory but we will revisit this closer to the hike)

Expectation:

This is NOT a beginner hike so you must be in good shape and have confidence in finishing it, in winter conditions! We will be keeping a steady 1.8 to 2mph pace throughout the hike and would try to hike as a group. However if you are slowing the group down (this includes myself too) I expect you to have the grace to turn back and wait at the trail head. You must have the gear above or you will be turned away before leaving the carpool spot/trailhead. You are responsible for having a map of this hike; this is not a guided hike. You are joining like-minded enthusiasts and are responsible for your own safety and preparedness. Beyond that lets make this a memorable trip, with great weather and a trip into a winter wonderland. Happy hiking!
