The Brookline Arts Center presents the works of Alison Horvitz, July 31-September 4. She studied painting at Boston University, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Massachusetts. Horvitz is also a founder and current coordinator at Fall River Open Studios and is a curator at The Cherry and Webb Gallery, in Fall River. Horvitz developed their series “Memory Jars: Containment” by using an explorative artistic process that would result in a painted construction of typical household vessel objects. Horvitz accomplishes this by applying multiple layers of paint which are sanded down or scraped away accordingly to generate these shapes that rise out of the multiple “skins” of paint. Each painting has a history in its layers which translates to a history of personal experience. Their works are inspired by turn-of-the-century trends called “memory jars” which originally served the purpose of honoring the deceased by collecting objects and storing them in a jar. Horvitz states that “ My current approach in creating paintings, abstraction contained within a shape, have become mandalas for me, centered shapes that allows for a sense of wholeness, of completion within the paintings, while offering a contained place for exploration of materials and ideas”. A public reception will be held Friday, August 7 from 6-8PM.
