The Fall 2021 New England Aquarium Lecture Series kicks off this month with Dr. Jonathan Foley, a leading climate scientist, sustainability expert, educator, and public speaker. Dr. Foley, who is the executive director of Project Drawdown, will join the Aquarium community for a virtual conversation focused on a hopeful, science-based approach to addressing climate change. Project Drawdown aims to stop global warming by identifying solutions, based on the latest science, that can help build a climate-safe future. The lecture will highlight a multi-faceted set of solutions that can help us stop climate change and pivot to a better, more sustainable world. Dr. Foley’s lecture is free to the public through the generosity of the Lowell Institute and presented virtually in partnership with Boston Globe Events.

Jonathan Foley’s work focuses on finding solutions to sustain the climate, ecosystems, and natural resources we all depend on. He has published over 140 scientific articles, including many highly cited works in Nature and Science, and has written many popular pieces for National Geographic, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Scientific American. A noted science communicator, he has presented at hundreds of venues, including the Aspen Institute, the World Bank, and the National Geographic Society.

Dr. Foley has won numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, awarded by President Clinton; the J.S. McDonnell Foundation’s 21st Century Science Award; the Sustainability Science Award from the Ecological Society of America; and the prestigious Heinz Award for the Environment. Prior to joining Project Drawdown, he served as the Executive Director of the California Academy of Sciences and led several environmental science and sustainability organizations with associated faculty appointments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota.
