Corine N. McHugh, a Philadelphia-based independent conservator of works on paper, will discuss the treatment choices she made while conserving a newly discovered panoramic painting from the Revolutionary War. The watercolor painting of a 1782 Continental Army encampment at Verplanck’s Point, New York is the centerpiece of the Museum’s limited-run exhibit, Among His Troops: Washington’s War Tent in a Newly Discovered Watercolor, on display through February 19, 2018. McHugh will discuss her efforts to bring this watercolor, painted by eyewitness artist Pierre Charles L’Enfant, back to its original format and best preserve the artist’s hand and intent. She will give an overview of the field of art conservation, its importance in the preservation of the Museum’s collection, and the ethical considerations in treating historic and artistic works.
