2017 marks the 50th anniversary of an auspicious arrival on US shores. In January of 1967, Sergio Leone’s A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS premiered in New York City and it was such a sensation that, before the end of the year, the other two films in his “Man with No Name” trilogy had also been released. Though Euro-Westerns had already been extremely popular abroad, this was the first time that American audiences had seen these unique, violent, and often weird reinterpretations of our national mythology. This brief series only scratches the surface of this broad swath of films but we include the key titles by Leone along with a sampling of other works by lesser known figures – including the rest of the “Three Sergios”: Sergio Corbucci (NAVAJO JOE) and Sergio Sollima (THE BIG GUNDOWN).
