Juantio Becenti's string quartet, The Forest at Dawn, is at the heart of this programmatic journey from struggle and discord to hope and promise. The program begins with Shostakovich’s austere String Quartet No. 11, which, like the Becenti quartet, opens with a lone, melancholy voice, adding players one by one. Both quartets face struggle and hardship by embracing musical dissonance, ultimately soaring to higher registers where hope resides. From here, we take a collective breath of fresh air with the peaceful, lilting Allegretto from Mozart's K. 590, which continues the uplift Becenti began. The program culminates as the mood continues to rise and “Dawn Breaks'' with our arrangement of George Harrison’s Here Comes the Sun.
