Special Guest, established novelist and Newton resident Suzanne Matson, reads from her new novel, Ultraviolet (It’s included in Real Simple’s roundup of The Best Books of 2018.);

Three artists and a novelist walk into a living room…
2nd annual Arts Open House

Four Newton Highlands residents invite the public for a casual drop-in afternoon of art and story, mingling and refreshments.

Ellen Fisher, artist and director of Newton Open Studios, artist Marcus Parsons, and photographer Ellen Kaplovitz will open the doors from 2pm to 6 pm on Sunday, November 18th for their 2nd annual neighborhood Arts Open House. The artists and their special guest, established novelist Suzanne Matson, all live within a few hundred feet of each other in the Highlands.

Fisher, Parsons, and Matson will give short presentations from 2 to 3 pm. Then, from 3pm until 6pm, the artists will host a relaxed afternoon of art exhibits and mingling with friends and neighbors, with refreshments. Visitors are welcome to come at any time.

During the short presentations, Parsons will speak about his digital art—a free-flowing visual journal—accompanied by a brief slideshow of his digital paintings, drawings, and photography. Fisher will speak on using metaphor to build engaging, multi-leveled representations of complex subjects. Her subjects include the nature of memory and perception (the forest series), and broader social issues (the flower series on forced labor). And Matson will give a reading from her new novel (her fourth), Ultraviolet.

Ultraviolet was included in Real Simple's roundup of "The Best Books of 2018”, and Literary Hub recently featured an excerpt. Readers have found it timely, moving, and profound, “…an accomplished saga of the shifting personal and historical complications of American womanhood" (Publisher’s Weekly, in a starred review). Her previous novel, The Tree-Sitter, was short-listed for the PEN New England / Winship Award.

The Artists will display their latest work. Kaplovitz’s will feature photographs taken at museums and historical sites across the U.S., Mexico, and Europe, where she turned her attention from the art on the walls to the guardians of that art—the guards and staff.

Fisher and Parsons exhibit regularly in the area, but decided last fall that it would be fun to hold an informal one-day exhibit in one of their homes, for their friends, neighbors, and the public. This year, they are adding short talks about their art. “We’re very excited about adding the art-process presentation component. We envision it as a possible first-in-a-series of living-room Salons, with invited guest artists, great discussions, and some good wine and cheese,” said Fisher, with a smile. "We’ll see how this initial event is received.”

The event will take place at 41 Waldorf Road in Newton Highlands, on Sunday, November 18th, from 2-6pm, with presentations from 2-3pm, and exhibits from 3-6pm.
