A VISION FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN BOSTON

The Alliance’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Members will start with a brief update of our accomplishments over the past year, which includes an outline of our new Strategic Plan. We will then be among the first to hear Murray Miller, Director of Historic Preservation for the City of Boston, vision for historic preservation in Boston.

After the creation of an independent Office of Historic Preservation in 2022 by Mayor Wu, an early order of business was to incorporate an inclusive and honest account of Boston’s history that would inform an aspirational vision for historic preservation. Such a vision would rely upon a deep commitment to centering racial equity and justice around historic preservation in Boston and it would consider creative and bold initiatives that acknowledged the great work that has been done with a view towards the critical challenges that are now upon us.

A Vision for Historic Preservation in Boston recognizes the clear signals that we must push forward with deliberate thoughtfulness and impactful strategies that would position the practice of historic preservation in Boston to be nationally known for its transformative efforts to uncover, share, and preserve local stories of the city’s rich history, advancing environmental stewardship, and uplifting underserved communities for the benefit of present and future generations.

The Vision for Historic Preservation in Boston aspires to see some of the transformative efforts elevated in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary in anticipation that one of the nation’s most historic cities might seize this tremendous opportunity.

ABOUT THE POLISH AMERICAN CITIZEN’S CLUB

The Polish American Citizens Club began in 1924 when a group of Polish World War I veterans invested their savings and purchased an old shoe factory, where they formed the Young Polish Men’s Club.

In the late 1930s, the founders and members of Boston’s Polish immigrant and Polish-American community came together to raise money and build a new building. In 1939, the new club, now known as the Polish American Citizens Club, opened its doors.

After World War II, an influx of Polish immigrants and refugees helped to grow the club into an important fixture in Boston’s Polish-American community. The PACC became a place where families and friends gathered and celebrated, where parties and political galas were held, where veterans could reminisce, and where Poles could celebrate their new lives in America.

In 2016, members elected the youngest group of officers and directors in the club’s history, and in 2017, the club’s first female president, Mrs. Stasia Kacprzak, was elected.

For almost 80 years, the Polish American Citizens Club has been a fixture of the community and with the support of Polonia in Boston and beyond, we look forward to another 80 years!
