One in five undergraduates in the U.S. is a student parent, yet these students often lack one of the basic foundations of college success -- safe, affordable housing. In a national study, Autumn Green, Ph.D., and her colleagues found that only eight percent of colleges and universities in the U.S. offer housing options that allow student parents to live with their children, and these options may be extremely limited or unaffordable for undergraduate students. Due to limited affordable housing options, student parents experience housing insecurity and homelessness at concerning rates. Even more alarming, a number of institutions are reducing or eliminating their family housing programs, despite rising need. In this program, Dr. Green, an applied sociologist, will share her research findings on the growing housing crisis for student parents, who are overwhelmingly low-income, first-generation students, and women of color.

This is a program of the Social Change Dialogues at the Wellesley Centers for Women and is free and open to the public. Tea, coffee, and cookies will be provided. Parking is available in the Davis Parking Facility. For accessibility questions, contact Accessibility Services at Wellesley College.
